How to Pick Up the Big Four (4-7-6-10) Split – Conversion Tips
July 12, 2009 by Bowl 900
Here is a question that is asked quite a bit. What is the best way to convert the 4-7-6-10 split, also known as the Big Four? Well I can only say luck has a lot to do with it or you need to be very acurate as to how the ball hits the pins.
I have personally picked it up once and they way I did it is by throwing my spare ball straight and hard at the 6-10. I hit the 6 on the front left, which deflected into the 10 with some force which made the 6 hit the sidewall then the back curtain, then back onto the deck where it ended up in the middle of the 4-7, when it hit the 7 first then the 4 fell forward.
I was totally shocked, I can now check that off my list of bowling accomplishments.

Bowling on the PBA Viper Pattern
July 1, 2009 by Bowl 900
Here are some tips for attacking the Viper Pattern.
Length: 37 feet
A viper strikes with multiple angles of attack. This pattern will challenge players to attack the pins from multiple angles in order to score well.
2008 Winners on Viper: It was a day of firsts as Brad Angelo and Stefanie Nation each captured their first career PBA title at the Pepsi Viper Championship at Thunder Alley in Omaha, the second stop of the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.
Description: The 2009-10 Viper has also been changed to allow for more ball roll in the middle part of the lane. While the Viper is a multiple angles pattern and normally yields medium to high scores, bowlers this season will need to place a premium on the ball traveling straight through the front part of the lane when the lanes are “fresh”. Once Viper breaks down, multiple angles are available for attack. Even with the changes, Viper still remains the most versatile of the five named patterns and can be used on any lane surface. The champion on Viper will be the bowler who can outsmart their opponent playing multiple lines. 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tournaments Using Viper: Viper Championship – Allen Park, MI PBA Match Play Championship – Norwich, CT PBA Marathon Open – Baltimore, MD

USBC New Red, White and Blue Lane Pattern Conditions
June 16, 2009 by Bowl 900
The United States Bowling Congress plans to introduce a new series of lane conditions for certified competition. The group of patterns is designed to provide bowlers a better description for the difficulty of traditional “house” conditions.
As part of the plan, leagues and tournaments will have the option of using oil patterns falling into USBC Red, White or Blue condition categories. USBC Red pattern will be the most forgiving condition, USBC White will be more challenging and USBC Blue will be the most difficult of the new “house” conditions. USBC Sport Bowling conditions will continue to be the most challenging level of oil patterns.
“We know that lane conditions have a tremendous impact on the sport,” USBC Vice President-National Governing Body Neil Stremmel said. “House shots can be very easy or reasonably challenging. Knowing the difficulty of the condition helps build credibility for the sport and adds a new fun element for bowlers.”
The new condition categories are scheduled for testing later this year in cooperation with the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America. The conditions should be available for tournament use in spring 2010 and for the fall 2010 league season.
“This program can provide proprietors an excellent marketing tool to attract and maintain league bowlers,” BPAA President Jim Sturm said. “Red, White and Blue can be used like stepping stones to progressively increase a bowler’s interest in the competitive side of the sport. We are eager to test the program and hear feedback from customers and proprietors.”
Use of the USBC Red, White and Blue conditions will be completely optional and the patterns will be available for download at no cost.
“A primary goal of the project is to make the USBC Red, White and Blue conditions easy for bowlers to understand and proprietors to utilize,” Stremmel said. “The industry’s lane machine manufacturers have been extremely supportive in making sure this program will work for nearly any center wanting to participate.”

Wes Mallot vs Michael Wilbon
April 15, 2009 by Bowl 900
After more than a month of friendly taunting and debate, ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption co-host Michael Wilbon accepted the challenge that 2009 PBA Bowler of the Year Wes Malott offered on March 4.
Wilbon traveled south to the Kegel Training Facility in Lake Wales, Fla., where he competed against Malott in a single-game, 10-frame match on Thursday. A casual bowler, Wilbon totaled an impressive 199. With Malott giving him a 57-pin handicap advantage entering the match, the PTI host surprised the crowd, Malott and even himself, defeating the PBA’s top kegler 256-248.
Wilbon said with a smile, “I now expect to go home and kick Tony Reali’s butt, Kornheiser’s butt, weekend hackers, I expect to kill them.”
Malott added: “We’ll see what Tony (Kornheiser) has to say. If he wants to come out, he’s more than welcome. Something like this is always good and as long as we have fun with it, it makes the season that much better.”
The Malott-Wilbon challenge will be aired as part of the five-week PBA King of Bowling Powered by AMP Energy series, Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, April 22-May 20, on ESPN. The event took place April 8-10.

Wes Malott Wins PBA Player Of The Year!
April 15, 2009 by Bowl 900
The 2008-09 PBA Player Of The Year race came down to the final week of the tour as many thought it would. Wes Malott entered the final week with a slim margin over Norm Duke and Chris Barnes. Wes bowled well all week but finished just outside of the cut while Barnes and Duke finished as the number three and number one qualifiers respectively. Barnes was taken out by Mike Scroggins in the Semi-finals by the score of 200-199. Scroggins then moved on to defeat Duke by the score of 191-173 and Malott was crowned PBA Player Of The Year.
Wes recently sat down with Storm Products’ Multi-media Director, Louie Wemett.
Louie Wemett – Well, first of all, how does it feel? What a thrill…PBA Player of the Year.
Wes Malott – It really hasn’t sunk in yet. The race went right down to the last frame. I was headed to the airport when I got the news from Parker Bohn. He called me and told me I was Player of the Year. When Chris (Barnes) left the solid 8 to lose to Mike Scroggins, I thought to myself, “maybe it’s meant to be.”

Picked up the 7-10 Split
January 19, 2009 by Bowl 900
HI gang, just wanted to point out that I picked up the 7-10 split the other night in league. Now I have done this 3 times before but this time it was special so to speak. I actually had to pick it up to win my overall total against my opponent. Now I wasn’t really trying but hoping for a clean shot off the hand into the 10 pin and a lucky bounce out of the back. And sure enough the shot had a good speed and was headed right were I was aiming and hit the ten in the left middle portion of the pin where it hit the side-back and bounced out of the pit onto the middle of the deck when the pin rolled into the 7. Nice ya?
Let me know how many of you have picked up this 7-10 split.
