USBC New Red, White and Blue Lane Pattern Conditions

June 16, 2009 by Bowl 900

usbcsmThe United States Bowling Congress plans to introduce a new series of lane conditions for certified competition. The group of patterns is designed to provide bowlers a better description for the difficulty of traditional “house” conditions.

As part of the plan, leagues and tournaments will have the option of using oil patterns falling into USBC Red, White or Blue condition categories. USBC Red pattern will be the most forgiving condition, USBC White will be more challenging and USBC Blue will be the most difficult of the new “house” conditions. USBC Sport Bowling conditions will continue to be the most challenging level of oil patterns.

“We know that lane conditions have a tremendous impact on the sport,” USBC Vice President-National Governing Body Neil Stremmel said. “House shots can be very easy or reasonably challenging. Knowing the difficulty of the condition helps build credibility for the sport and adds a new fun element for bowlers.”

The new condition categories are scheduled for testing later this year in cooperation with the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America. The conditions should be available for tournament use in spring 2010 and for the fall 2010 league season.

“This program can provide proprietors an excellent marketing tool to attract and maintain league bowlers,” BPAA President Jim Sturm said. “Red, White and Blue can be used like stepping stones to progressively increase a bowler’s interest in the competitive side of the sport. We are eager to test the program and hear feedback from customers and proprietors.”

Use of the USBC Red, White and Blue conditions will be completely optional and the patterns will be available for download at no cost.

“A primary goal of the project is to make the USBC Red, White and Blue conditions easy for bowlers to understand and proprietors to utilize,” Stremmel said. “The industry’s lane machine manufacturers have been extremely supportive in making sure this program will work for nearly any center wanting to participate.”

Wes Malott Wins PBA Player Of The Year!

April 15, 2009 by Bowl 900

malott70The 2008-09 PBA Player Of The Year race came down to the final week of the tour as many thought it would. Wes Malott entered the final week with a slim margin over Norm Duke and Chris Barnes. Wes bowled well all week but finished just outside of the cut while Barnes and Duke finished as the number three and number one qualifiers respectively. Barnes was taken out by Mike Scroggins in the Semi-finals by the score of 200-199. Scroggins then moved on to defeat Duke by the score of 191-173 and Malott was crowned PBA Player Of The Year.

Wes recently sat down with Storm Products’ Multi-media Director, Louie Wemett.

Louie Wemett – Well, first of all, how does it feel? What a thrill…PBA Player of the Year.

Wes Malott – It really hasn’t sunk in yet. The race went right down to the last frame. I was headed to the airport when I got the news from Parker Bohn. He called me and told me I was Player of the Year. When Chris (Barnes) left the solid 8 to lose to Mike Scroggins, I thought to myself, “maybe it’s meant to be.”

Is it Called a Bowling Lane or Alley?

June 17, 2008 by Bowl 900

bowling lane dimentionsAlthough they may sound similar, a bowling lane and a bowling alley are different things. A bowling alley, consisting of several parts, is the space used for bowling. One of those parts, and probably the most important, is the bowling lane.

A bowling lane is the long plane where a bowling ball rolls towards the pins. Usually, the lane consists of long wooden boards. These boards are joined together to form a lane 75 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. The wooden plane is very smooth. Bowling lane constructors smooth each wooden board before and after they connect them together. Afterwards, they put smoothing chemicals on the surface of the lane, and also use polishing techniques. The lane also has measurements on its surface, indicated with paint.

Beside the lane, on both sides, are the gutters. When a player manages to put his or her ball in the gutter, the shit is considered a miss. Gutters are 60 feet in length, beginning from the foul line to the pins. They are usually made of rubber or plastic. Just outside the gutters are the borders which separate one bowling lane from another.

At the end of the lane, facing the player is the bowling wall. The bowling wall is where the logo of the bowling center and other advertisements are placed. Just behind this wall is the bowling machine, one of the most important parts of a bowling alley.

The bowling machine places and rearranges the pins as well as retrieving and returning the ball back to the player. While the bowling machine is automatic, it is still supervised by a bowling center personnel. After every shot, the bowling machine returns the ball to the player on the other end of the lane via kinetic energy, through a tunnel. A ball-sorting mechanism is at the end of the tunnel and it sorts the balls that are being returned by the machine.

Finally, the scores are placed on monitors located above the lanes so the players can see them clearly. The scores are updated automatically via a computer, which calculates the scores based on the number of pins hit and still standing.

The game data is calculated by a computer and displayed on monitors located above the lane for the players to see. The players also have seats and a table at the end of the bowling alley. A rack with extra bowling balls is usually placed beside the seats.
